Burning Prejudice

An Adult Utopian/Dystopian Disaster Coming Soon

My Work In Progress

By: M.M. Mastropietro

Isaac lives in a literal house of garbage and so do all his friends. He chose a life in The Midden, but his elderly friend Dolly did not. She was thrown away like trash by her husband—Isaac assumes—long ago. Every lost one inside the dump has a story. Unfortunately, more and more of those stories have begun to sound the same: a snatcher was paid to abduct someone from the pristine city of Prejudice and drop that person down a garbage chute at the local dump. There they are banished forever since nobody in the city believes soap and water will ever make a lost one clean enough (read: worthy) to set foot in town again.

Meda Lovegood has worked all her life in charity and philanthropy. She grew up as the perfect sidekick for her mother—a woman desperate to gain the mayor’s seat and put her mark on Prejudice. Meda’s aspirations aren’t so grand. She simply wants to help anyone in need in every way she can. Unfortunately, others have taken notice, including Isaac. She is beloved and, in his mind, that makes her the perfect target for the next organized abduction. Meda becoming a lost one is the perfect catalyst to ignite a revolution and change the ridiculous laws that keep innocent people captive.

As her mother finally wins the job of her dreams, Meda is taken into a nightmare. The guards patrolling the Midden boundary have come unhinged. They wander on the periphery of society, policing the lost ones from the clean side of the fence, armed to the teeth and more than happy to control the population of The Midden through deadly means. Meda knows her choice. She must decide between living in a nightmare or dying for a cause. Isaac must convince her to spark the revolution without anyone suspecting him of setting such a plan in motion. What Isaac didn’t plan for was his annoying neighbor inviting Meda to live right next door or for Meda’s charm and beauty taking his heart hostage.
